Cornish Culture

An English Nationalist who cannot, or will not, (and I suspect it is the latter because he realises that he has painted himself into a corner) understand the difference between "culture" and "cultural heritage/identity" told me today that in discussions with people that they could not define Cornish Culture; I suspect that he bored them just as much as he is boring me with harping on that I have said that the English have no culture, when what I actually said was that the English lack a distinct cultural heritage/identity. The said people, I suspect, simply quickly got rid of him by failing in the task, which is very simple if this person only did what I have just done; ten minutes with Google produced quite a bit of Cornish culture which I present here, with the caveat that this is "Cornish Culture" not "Cornish Cultural heritage/identity" which is something quite different.

First off a traditional Cornish song about the English:-

Trelawny

With a good sword and a trusty shield
A faithful heart and true
King James's men shall understand
What Cornish men can do
And have they fixed the where and when?
And shall Trelawny die?
Here's twenty thousand Cornish men
Will know the reason why.

Chorus
And shall Trelawny live?
Or shall Trelawny die?
Here's twenty thousand Cornish men
Will know the reason why.

Out spake the captain brave and bold
A merry wight was he
Though London Tower were Michael's hold
We'll set Trelawny free
We'll cross the Tamar, land to land
The Severn is no stay
Then one and all and hand in hand
And who shall bid us nay.

And when we came to London wall
A pleasant sight to view
Come forth, come forth, ye cowards all
Here are better men than you
Trelawny, he's in keep in hold
Trelawny he may die
But twenty thousand Cornish men
Will know the reason why.

That was not that difficult and it is something this person could have done for himself, had he not been so intent on attacking me for his lack of ability to read my words in the context in which they were written. But then what should I expect from these people, it is their stock in trade to take bits and pieces out of context and twist them to their own ends; not only that but to then put words into the mouth of the person who wrote them. As I say, about par for the course; they would do better to stop whingeing about inconsequential odds and sods and concentrate on what they claim to be their main purpose in life, getting an English Parliament; personally I think if that happens in the way in which they expect it to all the sinners in Hell will be enjoying a good old fashioned snowball fight!

Errr, Numpty, I already have looked at Google, years ago during my arguments with Saunders and Watts. You really are quite rude aren't you? Apparently, I bore you, wow, rapier wit alert! You were the one professing to be wallowing in a unique and uniquely Cornish culture - I merely asked you, yourself to detail examples of such uniqueness. Trundling out a few web links is a bit passe I think. I did not dispute the fact that Cornwall has a culture, I disputed your assersion that it was unique. I also took issue with the 'English have no culture' thread.

Maybe I should troll out some English culture web sites - thousands and thousands and thousands of them..... But what would that prove? Possibly the paucity of cornish culture sites in comparison maybe.

You have singularly failed to give one single example of unique Cornish culture. I have asked twice before for a list - your list on anything in Cornwall that is unique to that part of the world. For example, I see you've chosen a dance site, fab, but is it unique - or is it derivitive, or is it the same but in another part of England? In Devon or Dorset or Lancashire , are they performing a local alternative? My answer is emphatically 'yes' - but would you agree? Or would you stick to your 'no culture' guns?

The May Day 'Obby 'Oss celebration is hardly unique, it's local equivalent can be found all over England. Ancient piss ups are as common as rainy days, old men with beards doing pagany things are all over England. Most of them were resurrected during the Victorian era - although I see that FOCS was only formed in 1924, so they were a bit late in coming to the digging up culture party.

I see that you have resorted to explaining why you think England has no culture is because the English are so damn aggressive...... Now I really do find this to be a really bizzarre turn for the worse in our little discussion. Suddenly, I'm seeing Saxon jackboots crushing celts left right and centre. This is of course utterly bogus as well you know. You'll be glad to know, I shall be returning to that subject in the very near future.

In the meantime, maybe you should look to yourself, maybe answer at least one of my questions - I notice you have given the Mebyon Kernow, Plaid, and Scottish Nationalist question a body swerve. Maybe you could give a straight answer - if you're not too bored that is.

ps - 'Trelawny! Is that it?
pps - I too am an artist - maybe if I saw some of your work, I could give you a bit of a crit?

If you don't like what you read why don't you go someplace else and stop picking arguments for the sake of it; I would tell you to fuck off, but I am too much of a gentleman. So why don't you go and scrape up some brain cells from someplace! IS THAT RUDE ENOUGH FOR YOU?

Yeah, really is irritating ain't it mate........ picking arguments for the sake of it.

People shoving their noses into other people's interests, picking arguments, sneering, dissing etc. Like you and the CofStG forum. Like you and the EDP. Like you and the CEP.

And I just love your use of good old Anglo Saxon..... but surely it compromises your fantastically strict 'comments deletion' policy? Or is swearing only allowed by Numpty?

So, no lists on culture and no answer to my question about Mebyon Kernow, Plaid and the Scots Nats. It figures - I've only asked 3 times and still no show. Predictable.

I already have the links you so proudly posted. I've had them for years. Don't you see Numpty, I asked you the question - but I already knew the answer....... And I knew you wouldn't answer it, because you couldn't.

Your jibe about brain cells is cheap. Maybe I've got brain damage, maybe one of my relations has, you just do not know, do you Numpty? But if I or they did, I would surely be grieviously offended by such a remark. Numpty, be careful with those insults - they could come back and bite you.

You will be glad to know I will not be visiting again - I'm bored with the standard of your arguments. It's wall to wall rants, and when someone disagrees with you, they're deleted or indirectly told to f**k off. Nice - real class.

I just can't be bothered interacting with a man who hates to hear an alternative view. A man with the vitriol and one eyed perspective of hate on everything English. You and Martyn are free to continue with your cyber back slapping. I'd like to say it's been fun, but it's been a real yawn. You spouting waffle to an adorning but very, very small audience - and for the really big thrill, raiding English Nationalist sites, like someone earwigging an overheard conversation - giving you enough stuff to fill out your blog. You just cannot stop going back to them can you? You hate them but it's like a kind of drug.....

As you say in your last comment: "If you don't like what you read why don't you go someplace else and stop picking arguments for the sake of it.......

Maybe you could follow your own advice?

You're just like all the rest of the anti English movement - terrified of England having an identity, a culture and a voice - whilst revelling in Scottish and Welsh national identity...... I wondered how long it would take you to accuse the English of being violent aggressors - and to use that as your justification to say that England has no culture.... less than a day.

I expected a bit longer, my bet was day 2, my colleague reckoned a day would do it - she wins the money!

La vendetta it ain't. Insulting and abusive, most definitely.
